Letting go

Shortlisted for Mearns Short Story Competition 2017

Cameron stared at the fruit, his hand hovering above the bowl. Picking up an orange he looked up out of the window, feeling the slightly pitted peel; he stood still, eyes glazed, the weight of it felt good - its softness somehow comforting.

Outside an eagle screamed...at last he was seeing again.

The Smiling Man
Published Ripples Magazine October 2017

“I’ll be… guy with…clipboard…,” the estate agent told me over the phone whose reception dipped and sank into oblivion.

The cottage sat nestled amongst the dry stone walls of its neighbours; its years far more than those surrounding it – far wiser than the more contemporary buildings adjacent. Its garden clearly neglected now where once it would have been very fruitful. Two large, old, gnarled apple trees stood to either side of the house like sentries on guard and a large square of soil, formerly a vegetable patch, but now full of choking, creeping weeds was situated at the side of the cottage.

The grey-green paint on the windows and door were peeling like that of a snake, shedding its skin, ready for a new lease of life – is that what the cottage was doing, shedding – waiting for its new occupants to revive it and bring new life into it?

Saint Valentine
Adapted for Radio 2017

It’s almost time…

Anxiously I watch the clock, the seconds move like minutes; the gentle tick-tock of time passing. I hear my mother’s voice, “Don’t wish your life away.”

It’s nine forty-two.

Dare I look out the window? What if he sees me, or worse, walks by?

     He’s never late.

I think about making coffee – by that time he’ll be here. I think back to last week, before Luke left again for overseas work, and consider our fight. We said so many hurtful things. I hate him being away so much, I know I am being selfish but I miss him…I always feel like I am waiting for him and here I am again, waiting…
